COLLEGE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

1. To meet minimum requirements for most colleges, all students must earn 16 academic units in high school. Recommended courses should include 4 units in English, 2 units in the same world language, 2 units in laboratory science (for example, Biology and Chemistry), 3 units in math (Algebra I and higher), 2 units in social studies, and 3 additional units in any of the areas listed above. Most colleges require entrance tests as part of the admissions process. It is recommended that Junior stake the PSAT’s in October. Juniors should also take the SAT’s. Seniors should take the SAT’s and or the ACT’s in the fall. Some southern and western colleges require the ACT (American College Test) instead of the SAT’s for college admission. NOTE: The junior PSAT is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Programs. The junior SAT and class rank are the qualifying factors for the Bloustein Scholarship Program. Bloustein Distinguished Scholars are offered an annual award of $1,000 without regard to financial need. This award is only applied to New Jersey colleges and universities.

2. Most competitive colleges require the SAT II Subject Tests. Please check with the college to see if SAT II Subject Tests are required. Students should discuss with their counselors the best time to take these tests.

3. Registration materials for all testing programs are available in the Guidance Office and should be completed 6 weeks prior to the testing date. Students may also register on-line at www.collegeboard.com. Students eligible for special testing accommodations as per their IEP (Individualized Education Plan or 504 Plan) should see either their case manager or counselor upon entering high school.
